The D1RC UK Display Team, supported by HPI Europe, were doing their thing at the Snetterton Race Circuit on 10th October to entertain the Modified Live customers. After an indifferent summer, the event enjoyed cloudless skies and unusually mild conditions for October in Norfolk so it was tee shirts and shorts and, of course, just the excuse all those promo girls had been waiting for to strip off and distract our driving!
Located by the parc ferme garages and pit exit, our own pits overlooked the main straight and we were treated to all sorts of extreme motor sport spectacles, not least of which was a high speed collision of a rather tall show truck hitting the ‘Snetterton' display hoarding that is, or was, mounted off the start line tower and overhangs the track – I guess it wasn't designed to clear a sleeper cab! Doh! Back on our display track the action was continuous with back to back mini competitions, accompanied by Radio D1RC with it's music and informative commentary. There were many winners, all of who went home with a smile on the face and a HPI prize to play with! Despite the uneven surface – paddock areas are never flat as the heavy car transporter jack stands tend to leave their imprints – the HPI slick T-Drifts (#4406) performed brilliantly and we were able to compete as close as ever, impressing the public audience with our skills and, to be honest, ourselves at times! With the full 16 driver knock out finals system being operated, competitions lasted just under the hour and our appreciative audiences stayed and watched to the end, applauding the closest of runs and asking our drivers lots of questions – some even going beyond the normal ‘how much', ‘how fast' ones. We're always happy to answer them and if we can encourage one or two to take up the hobby it's all worthwhile - indeed, one of our drivers this year WAS just a spectator last year. The event was the last of our planned exhibition attendances for 2010, but you never know. We've also completed our UK D1RC Drift Series with Tom Walton taking the Pro Class honours and HPI Team Driver Pete Gray taking the Club Class and D1RC Drift Worlds Championship along the way. Me? I managed to recover to 4th in Pro by the last round, hampered by missing a round but it's the taking part, not winning...I keep telling myself! Hot Body Cyclones TC, HPI Pro D and HPI Pro 4 chassis featured large in the championships, a Cyclone TC taking the Worlds and Club Class and we have high hopes for the new Hot Bodies TCX for 2011. We'll be staying with the T-Drift #4406 as our control tyre too so if you fancy joining in, get a set and start practicing. Can't wait for the new season! John Turner, D1RC and Team HPI
