Zenoah Cup Challenge Baja Class Winner's Report

Fri, 27th February 2015

The Zenoah Cup Challenge is an annual large scale off-road race in the county of Essex in England, and it features a growing HPI Baja class, with many racers vying for the top trophy and bragging rights for the year ahead. Although the race is run in the middle of winter, it is run indoors so the weather conditions don't affect the drivers too much!

This year, Mark Pearson from Uber RC attended for the first time and took the overall win! Here is Mark's report from the weekend:

Having owned the Baja 5b for around 8 years now, I fancied my chances at racing the recent Zenoah Cup in February. I turned up for Fridays open practice sessions and adjusted the car throughout the day to get max grip and steering. Mainly this consisted of softening the springs, slowing the steering speed for this slippy surface, camber tweaks and other adjustments, as the driving surface is much different to what I'm used to.

On Saturday we had 4 qualifying rounds and I had an absolute nightmare: the first 2 rounds resulted in 2 dead servos, the 3rd round saw a 2nd place result and then in the 4th round I busted a rear shock shaft, so 3 DNFs and a 2nd place…not great! After much thought and much learned from the day, I adjusted the steering again to give me more play on the servo saver in an attempt to keep the car on all 4 wheels for the next days Finals.

Sunday started with a Semi-Final which had me 5th on the grid - after 15mins of racing I crossed the line in 2nd place, so a good solid result and I knew I had the setup spot-on! In the afternoon we had the A Final race, where I was 3rd on the grid. I had a solid start and avoided some carnage with the other drivers, which put me into 1st place after around 5 to 6 laps. I then settled into a smooth rhythm which at one point put me a lap and half ahead of 2nd place, but a few tricky collisions with backmarkers almost ended my day! But after 20 mins I crossed the line in 1st place.

The car ran perfectly, I learnt a lot from Saturday's issues and thankfully I held it together for when it mattered. I can't wait to get back on track next year now!
