HPI Micro Track
When the temperatures soar into the hundreds outside, build yourself a micro sized track indoors and race in air-conditioned comfort! The following is a step-by-step guide on how to build your very own micro sized track! At 32' by 16', it will fit in most small buildings, and is the perfect size track for hours of Micro fun! The track is complete with a long straight, sweeper, 180 degree hairpin and tight chicanes, complemented with corner dots and "grass" infield sections.
For this size track, a good starting setup is an RS4 Micro stock motor (part #1060) with a 5 cell battery pack (part #2414). Tire setup is HPI Carpet tire (part #4719) for the rear and HPI Med-Hard tire (part #4711) for the front.
You will need the following items:
12 - 1 5/8"
lag bolts, 7/16" hex head, 1/4" diameter ($3)
Approximate cost: $549 (excluding shipping)
The first step is to roll out the track surface carpet. Use double sided carpet tape to ensure that the carpet lays flat. You can use duct tape to join different pieces together.
Next, cut 12 8' lengths of the 1' 1/2" x 1' 1/2" pieces of wood. You will then cut the ends of pieces as in the photo below. NOTE: make sure that you cut the slots at the ends on opposite sides of the wood, and maintain the correct orientation.
Lay the pieces as shown below:
The next step is
to cut the PVC pipes. Use either a saw or a pipe cutter.
Place the PVC sections as illustrated below:
Note the different joints used in the different sections.
Use the adhesive backed velcro tape to secure the PVC pipes onto the track.
Use "dots" to create some curbing on the corners. Refer to the photos and illustrations below for directions on making them and for placements.
You can apply some "green" carpeting to simulate runoff areas of the track like the photos below. Use the self adhesive velcro to keep these in place.
Below are pictures of what the completed sections of the track are supposed to look like.
That's it - when you're finished assembling the track you can have hours of fun with your Micro enthusiast friends!
