How to remove the Diff in a Savage X
Posted by dracy69

You may be wondering how exactly your supposed to remove the diffs in s Savage X. The manual doesnt show exactly which screws to remove so it may be confusing (take note HPI). This should help you out.

First off, get a #2 sized screwdriver (you cannot use a universal driver as they are too thick to fit through the bumper). Take out the 2 counter-sunk screws on top of the bulkheads going into the shock tower.

Next, remove the 2 button head screws directly underneath the purple upper arm brace.

Then, the last of the screws, remove the 2 foward most counter-sunk screws holding on the skid plate.

Now, get a pair of needle nose plyers, remove the 2 retaining clips for the bumper support. Reach in between the shocks to get to them, you may be a little cramped.

After this is done, pull on the front bumper and slide the bumper supports out of the hole's they were in. Then, pull out the outer diff casing. you may have to hold down the front bumper, dont be afraid to bend the skidplate excessively. It wont break.

Now you can pull the differential out. You have to persuade it to come out, the ring gear is too tall to fit through the hole in the upright position and the dogbone's will want to hold onto the differential. You'll pretty much have to bend, pull, and just force your way out. This is the only real difficult part of the whole process.

Extra Comments:

  • If you are in the rear of the truck, turnbuckles wil be atatched to the outer diff casing, just bend the skidplate and push it downwards, it should get held in place by the turnbuckles.
  • The differential will be coated in grease, be ready to get dirty and I recommend you choose an equally dirty workplace, NOT the living room carpet.
  • These parts of the truck will stand your abuse, dont be afraid to use force if needed.

Tools needed: #2 Screwdriver, Needle nose plyers.

Disassembly: minimal, 6 screws and one plastic structure (not including diff).

Difficulty rating: 3. the only difficult part is pulling the ctual differential out.

Let me know how you liked my review! Id like to do more of these but with hop-ups.
