X GAMES 15 2009 Carson, CA Photos and words: Travis Brock July 30, 2009 Kicked off the Crystal Anniversary for the Summer X Games, that's right, its been 15-years already since ESPN introduced its annual extreme sport competition that draws all of the worlds top athletes to one place for a few days of fun, competition, and all out insanity. Over the past 15-years a lot of different sports have come and gone such as bungee jumping wearing a canoe, downhill street luge and even sky surfing. While some feel that their favorite sport may have X'd out, ESPN feels that their current line up of core events is main stream enough, and the ratings are their prove it. The X Games are now one of the world's largest sporting events and even hold a more prestigious title than the Olympics do in many peoples eyes. This year's X Games set new records in multiple events including Moto X Step-Up, Skateboard-Vert and Moto X Freestyle and even new attendance records were set. With an attendance record of over 25,000 people per day visiting the Home Depot center in Carson, CA it was a busy place, but the X Games had more to do than just watch extreme sports. This Years X Games had multiple booths set up from different companies such as Play Station, Dell Computers, AXE Body Spray and even the leader of all things R/C related, HPI RACING. HPI RACING was on hand for all 4-Days of this years X Games with one of the best drift tracks seen in quite some time. While the HPI Crew were able to construct a track with elevation changes, a couple decreasing radius corners, and a nice sweeper to run the HPI Sprint 2 Drifts on making by far the most interesting Drift tracks! HPI Racing also had a full team of talented mechanics, instructors, and even had a guest appearance from MC Schultz of Apple Valley who was keeping the crowd going as they were in line waiting to drift a car of their own. Over the weekend these cars saw some serious abuse, bounced off countless walls, entertained thousands and found their way into the hearts of so many that the event was a huge success in the eyes of HPI Racing and the X Games committee. With the way the X Games has grown over the past 15 years and with the addition of some of the newer events such as Rally X, ESPN's annual competition reaches millions and millions of viewers each year world wide. If it continues to grow at the pace it has been moving, I can only imagine what it will be like by the time X Games 20 hits.
