HPI Challenge 2009 at 301 Raceway, Maryland
Thank you to everyone for coming out and making the HPI Challenge at 301 09 an awesome weekend for everyone! A giant thanks to Todd Marshall, Chris Whitney and the entire 301 Raceway Crew for making it happen! HPI Challenge 2009 at 301 Raceway, Maryland Carlton Coleman The 301 Raceway hosted the second annual HPI Challenge on July 18, 2009, and it just as exciting to watch as it was to participate. The event had approximately 25 entries mostly competing in more than just one class. The first event was concourse with the all racers having to vote for the best painted car. The group had to vote twice and the winner was Chase Chandler with his patriotic Vintage HPI Camaro.
The first A-Main was the Electric RCGT. Tom Kaiser put on a driving clinic as he started from the TQ position and lead from start to finish. Next was Nitro Vintage GP A-Main. What was thought to be a “walk in the park” for Todd Marshall, proved to be everything but that. Todd started first but quickly lost the lead to James Demark who drove around and away from the field every lap. Todd tried to catch James but only had one opportunity when James entered the pits for a splash and dash. Todd took the lead for three turns but once they were on the 301 long straightaway his rear view mirror was full of the front of James’ car coming right on his rear bumper. Through one more turn, James again drove around Todd as Todd just gave it to much horse power and spun out. James took the chequered flag with Andrew Earle held on to third. Vintage Electric A-Main followed the same level of excitement as the nitro vintage. Arin Namo started first and at the drop of the green flag he left the field and hid while all the other cars battled for second through fourth place. Tom Brown had second but was soo overtaken by Andy David. Next Komkit Listisard worked his nose into the battle but was denied first by Tom Brown. After a “board meeting” and a few laps, Komkit was back up on Tom Brown, taking advantage of Tom’s line as he drifted a little wide in the turn and Komkit’s horse power wasn’t enough. Tom brought this battle to a closing with his third position. Andy David, the good sportsman, held off other’s charge. The results were Arvin Nano first, Andy David a hard fought second and Tom Brown third.
The Nitro RCGT and HPI Nitro Pro A-main were not as exciting as the last two events. There were three cars in each and James Demark drove to the finish uncontested in both mains.
HPI Super Nitro A-main saw the famed Todd Marshall and Wilmott Earle. Todd TQ but at the drop of green flag he had some brief car trouble and was passed by Carlton Coleman who held the lead for three laps until he was plagued with car problems, by than Todd took the lead and finished first with Wilmot Earle finishing second and Paul Carrington with third.
HPI-HB Monster Truck A-Main, this was exciting to watch as Chase Chandler drove to the win but it was Ross Bartrick that was entertaining the crowd with his bicycling style driving on two wheels and waving one wheel in the air around the turns. Andrew Thong, the youngest competitor finished third.
HPI Electric TC Open A-Main this being last main of the day Komkit Listisard TQ and won the race. Komkit drove as he was on a mission not making any mistakes. At the end Arvin Nano took second place and Andrew Thong came in third.
