| Some of the early batches of the Savage X trucks had the gear mesh set too loose from the factory, which can cause the spur gear to strip. The most recent batches of Savage X trucks have had the gear mesh set correctly, but since there is always the chance that some of the original batches are still in the marketplace, we recommend that you check your gear mesh prior to running the truck. To check the gear mesh, hold the clutchbell with one finger and move the spur gear back and forth. If the gear mesh is correct there will be a very small amount of “wiggle” between the two gears. If it is too loose it will rattle back and forth, if it is too tight there will be no movement between the gears. If the mesh is not set correctly, see the gear mesh video (5.7mb .wmv file) or read the following instructions. To set the gear mesh, use a small piece of normal notebook paper and put it between the clutchbell and spur gear, push the engine so that the clutchbell snugs up against the spur gear, then tighten the engine screws. Remove the paper and check to make sure that the teeth can “wiggle” back and forth just a little bit. Almost no wiggle is best. If the gear mesh is too tight (no wiggle) it will cause excessive friction which might overheat the gear and cause it to melt, if it is too loose it could shear off the teeth of the spur gear. Once the gear mesh is set, remove one screw at a time and apply a small amount of threadlock to each screw. We recommend using a 3mm drill-blank style hex wrench for best results, they allow you to tighten the screws with more force than a standard steel “L” wrench. Check your gear mesh (and all chassis screws) after every few tanks to make sure that it is still set correctly. |
