Team HB at the Worlds: 4WD Qualifying

Fri, 9th October 2015

Day 2 in the 4wd class at the Worlds Championships at the Yatabe Arena in Japan would be 1 last free practice followed by 4 rounds of Qualifiers. Ty and David chose to run two slightly different programs.

Ty ran a number of option parts designed to make the D413 work better on Astroturf. Mainly a new 6mm longer chassis plate and thicker top deck to make the car stiffer. A new prototype slipper in place of center diff which is better in high grip conditions. A new aluminium steering rack and new front and rear there is new diff cases with higher hinge pin mounting points that allow the car to be run with lower ride height without changing the car’s resting geometry.

David on his side chose to run a stock D413 on which he only replaced the chassis with an aftermarket Redworkshop +4mm aluminum chassis and carbon top decks, also fitted with the new prototype slipper.

Ty showed some really good speed in Q1, with 7th, but then everything seemed to go backward and he ended the day in 19th after 4 rounds of Qualifying. Ty now needs a top 3 in the last Q5 on Saturday morning to possibly make it into the A-main.

Here is what he had to say:

Ty: "Tomorrow morning we're gonna try to setup the car like it was in the 1st round and kinda start all over again. Hopefully tomorrow is better."

David's program went extremely well, with two 3rd (Q2 and Q3) and a 4th (Q1), the Swedish driver is currently 4th overall before the final Qualifier on Saturday morning.

David: "The day started really good. In the last free practice this morning I felt the car had the pace to be competitive for the top 3. I wanted to get some good points right from the beginning. I managed to be 4th in the first one and then two 3rd places, so I am already locked in the A-main after 3 runs. Now I am just trying to improve the car to see if I can find more speed and hopefully I can improve my starting position on the grid, but anyway, I think it is not a bad thing to start 3rd or 4th behind Bruno and Naoto, you never know when you have those guys ahead of you, they can be pretty aggressive, so anything can happen in the A-main."
