Ty Tessmann has scored another ROAR Nationals title with the D812, taking home the title once again after starting 3rd in Buggy and 2nd in the Truggy A Main races this past weekend at Thornhill Racing Circuit in Texas, just outside of the state capital and home of the Circuit of the Americas full-size Formula One track, Austin!
'Team Tessmann' was in full force, with dad Gord doing the mechanic and pit duties with mother Leanne helping out in the pits. They pitted under the new HB double-wide gazebo with other HB racers and HB/HPI designer Torrance Deguzman, and Ty was fully focussed on the weekend, at the same track where he'd had a fantastic weekend at the ROAR Gas Warm-Ups, taking 2 of the 3 class wins in style.
With his previous knowledge of the track, Ty was able to trade TQ times with other top North American contenders for the ROAR crown, and eventually started 2nd on both the buggy and truggy grids after a grueling period of qualifying runs that saw many of the top names in the game fall to the wayside!
With the Truggy A Main up first, Ty started behind TQ Dakota Phend and they soon left the rest of the field in their dust as they pulled away to start the 45-minute main event. The pair traded the lead position for much of the race, even trading mistakes as they swapped first spot over an over. On the final lap, Phend was leading and Ty was pushing hard, even down into the final corner Ty's D8T was snuck underneath the lead truck, but an unfortunate position spun out the leader and Ty in a very sporstmanlike move waited for Phend to be marshalled properly, allowing him to cross the line first as Ty finished just behind in second.

The Buggy class is the big-money, high-drama class - more racers enter this class, so there's more stress and pressure to win. Starting in third gave Ty a great opportunity to shadow the leaders rather than take the strain of leading the race, and that's exactly what happened.
The Buggy A Main started much the same as the Truggy race, but swapping former World Champ and perennial Nats contender Ryan Maifield as Ty's main challenger during the 60-minute race. TQ Dakota Phend had a race-defining crash that took his car well off the track and took a very long time to marshall, and meanwhile Maifield and Tessmann carried on, clicking off fast laps and leaving the rest of the A Main racers behind.
Both drivers drove hard, aching to go home with the victory - pitting on the same lap time after time, Maifield leading and Ty riding his rear tires until a big crash by Maifield, followed by an even bigger crash by Tessmann! Ty lost some time but very soon started to pull the gap closer and tighter over the last 5 minutes of the race.
On the very last lap, Ty stuck this D812 under Ryan's car, then a desperate move by Maifield forced a big tangle-up and finally a mistake forced his car on its roof, solidifying Ty's hour-long race and sealing him in the top spot as the 2014 ROAR Gas Buggy Nationals Champion!
