IFMAR 1/8th Off-Road Worlds Update - Quali Day 2

Thu, 11th November 2010

It's Day 2 of Qualifying in Thailand, and with no repairs to the track being done overnight it will be interesting to see how the track holds up to hours and hours of abuse from dozens and dozens of hardcore RC racers!

With the news from Day 1 of Qualifying being dominated by the tyre war from several different tyre brands, Day 2 looks like the talking point will be taken back by the huge Pattaya RC track! Dusty conditions greeted the racers and some of the top racers from Day 1, and the times for the drivers dropped in Qualifying Round 3, with no one being able to make the magical 14 laps. Watch this new interview with Atsushi Hara explaining what's new on the D8 Hara Edition kit, and how it will help in Thailand! Check out this interview with Ty Tessman and his father/mechanic! How Qualifying Works There are 6 total rounds of qualifying, with every driver running 2 rounds per day. Each driver's best 4 qualifying rounds count towards their placement in the A and B Finals. Unlike normal club racing, every driver is aiming to make it into one of two Semi-Final races, which will have 8 drivers each. These are the Semi-Final A and Semi-Final B - below these races there are 1/2 A, 1/2 A, 1/4 B, 1/4 B and so on all the way to 1/1024. Each of these lower races will have the top 4 drivers each 'bump up' into the next race, so while it's possible to qualify in the 1/1024 Final and move all the way up into the Final, that's not the way anyone wants to reach the Final! It's much easier to do well in qualifying, make it into the Semi-Final and take your time preparing for the Final! The fastest (or luckiest) 12 drivers then make it into the Final - the 1-hour race that will determine the 2010 World Champion! Qualifying The good news for Team HB was that reigning World Champion Atsushi Hara took the fastest time in this round of qualifying, while many of his top rivals from other teams didn't do very well - this allowed him to move from 5th to 4th in the overall standings. Even more encouraging was that this was another 'safety' run, like his Round 2 run (which saw him second overall). Teammate Jesse Robbers finished 20th overall with a much-improved time increasing his chances of getting into the Semi-Finals. Ty Tessman didn't improve his time from Round 1 but remained in 8th place overall. complete Qualifying Round 3 results here Round 3 didn't go well for many racers after a quick rain shower changed the grip of the track significantly. For Team HB, Ty did well and moved up to 8th overall, while Josh also did well, posting the 7th fastest time in this round and his fastest heat time so far. Unfortunately for Atsushi Hara, an unlucky rock stopped his engine before his qualifying run and he wasn't able to make it through the whole 10-minute run without refueling, making him slip down the overall order several spots while some of his main rivals moved up. complete Qualifying results after Round 4 here The overall Qualifying order right now features no dropout rounds, so the slowest heat times for each driver will start getting factored beginning with Round 5. So tomorrow morning we'll start getting a firmer idea of who's qualified well - it seems like all of the top runners have had one bad run each, so tomorrow is really crunch time for everyone!

As you can see from the above Qualifying action video link, putting together a solid 10-minute run with zero mistakes is extremely tough! And on such a tough track, at the World Championships, ten minutes can seem like an eternity!
Check out how HUGE and awe-inspiring the World Championship track is! NeoBuggy Thursday photos
