So, back home after another IFMAR World Championship event, this year it was 1/10 scale Off-Road that was on the schedule. The race was held at the worlds famous Yatabe Arena in Tsukuba City, Japan.

Having put in many hours of practice before the race I felt very prepared going into the event. The schedule for the race started with 2wd on 4th-6th of October then a day off in between to prepare for the 4wd class.

Going into the event with a new 2wd car that I know is working very good on low traction surfaces, now we would get to see how it could handle the very high bite AstroTurf at Yatabe Arena.

As the race started I felt that we were missing speed in the car, it was also hard to drive as the car generated so much traction, which was not really needed at the Worlds track. We tested so much stuff in each round but struggled to find a setup that worked on the track.  The 2wd race was a very frustrating race, but it was one of those to forget as soon as possible. After the race was finished I found myself way down in the list on 52nd place. I did all I could to find out why we didn’t get the car to work, but there was not enough time to find out early enough. We have a good idea about what we should do for the carpet/turf racing and I´m excited to test and evaluate our ideas we have.

Now onto the 4wd race! I had a good feeling going into the 4wd class; I attended the first round of the EOS, which was held just two weeks before the Worlds. There I finished in a strong 4th place and my car was very good in the mains. I kept working on the setup before I left to Japan and I felt very well prepared and was excited to get started.

When we first got out in the track in Free Practice I could feel that the base of the car felt really good directly and I would just need to fine-tune the setup. My speed was there and I was in the top 10 on raw speed in the four rounds of free practice. Going into the two rounds to finish the first day of 4wd I managed to put three decent laps together and got 8th overall going into qualifying.

What I knew was that my 5 minute pace was good, I wasn’t the fastest on the best lap, but the feeling I had over 5 minutes was very good! I saw some guys in practice being able to do very fast laps on outright speed but struggled to put a solid run together, so my goal for qualifying was to keep the consistency in my run.

Very unusual for me was to start out very good right in Q1 (normally I always have to put in some good results towards the end of qualifying haha). However I wasn’t very fast but I hold it together and would go on to finish 4th in Q1, just 3 hundreds of a second from 2nd place in the round, so close! It felt very nice to get a good result in the first round. For Q2 I didn’t change anything on the car and once again I had a very good run, I was about 2 seconds faster on the overall time and would go on to finish in 3rd place for the round.

Having two very good runs to start out with I pretty much knew that one more like that and I had my spot in the A-main secured. Again in Q3 I had another great run and I was close to the TQ, only 1 second off but finished in third place once again. However I was super happy as I secured my first ever A-main at a World Championship event in the 4wd class.

For the last two rounds I was just looking to improve the car and we tested a bunch of stuff, but nothing made it any better really. So for the A-mains I would go back to the setup I used for the first three rounds of qualifying, a setup that was very easy to drive but maybe not the fastest. I knew that consistency would be a key in the A-mains.

Lining up 4th on the grid I knew that anything could happen so I just wanted to stay out of trouble and try to be there when it was going to happen if so. A1 started out very good and I got up to third after a mistake by Michal starting in second place. When I got into third place nothing more really happened and it was a cruise to the finish line from there. It felt great to start out with a good result, as a third place, and then I knew I had any chance on the podium.

A2 also started out very good for me, I got by Naoto on the second lap and was running right behind Michal in third. Bruno pulled away up in front and went home with the World title. Naoto hacked me a couple of times when he was trying to get by after his early mistake, this let Mayfield by and in the end I finished 4th in A2. This result made up for an exciting A3 as the podium was still wide open.

I had a good feeling going into the last main and I knew 2nd place overall would be possible but I would be super happy with third place too. Naoto pushed Michal very hard in the start, which led Michal to make a mistake. I could capitalize on his mistake and got up in second behind Naoto. I knew that if we would finish like that, the third place overall would be mine, so I settled down and controlled my race in second. Naoto slightly pulled away up in front just for him to crash with about one minute to go. Unfortunately I wasn’t close enough to get by him while he was being marshaled so I would finish second.

However I am super happy with the result as it was my first podium at an IFMAR event. My car was working amazing the whole race and I couldn’t be happier with my whole package! I also want to thank Oskar Levin for all the hard work he put in during the whole week making sure everything was on top before every round!
