For the past few years, the Pro-Line By the Fire scale crawling event in Apple Valley, California, has drawn scale off-road adventure enthusiasts to the rocky desert of Southern California.

Located an hour and a half east of Los Angeles, just over the San Gabriel mountains which border the LA basin and on the eastern outskirts of Victorville and Hesperia, Apple Valley was home to the "singing cowboy" Roy Rogers and featured in many Hollywood movies from the 1930's to the 2000's.

In addition to its movie fame, its prime location at the western edge of the Mojave Desert and at the foothills of the San Bernardino mountains means it's ideal for all kinds of wheeled off-road adventure, including the scale variety!

This year's event took place over the May 19-20 weekend, and HPI Racing was invited to attend. Our R&D team of Dave Potter and Thad Garner (designer of the Venture) attended, bringing along their own customized Venture FJ Cruiser trucks.

HPI Racing was a sponsor of the event, and Dave and Thad brought along some HPI kits for the prize table - definitely a welcome sight! The organizers estimated that the attendance was double over the previous year, which is great to hear. Over 350 drivers turned out to this event. More RC is always better!

The Horseman’s Center Park in Apple Valley is a great location for numerous trails to test your rig. The amazing granite rock piles combine with the sandy soil to provide a great challenge for trucks of all sizes and types. On top of the fabulous location, the weather was great, so it was a lot of fun to put the Venture through all the events Pro-Line had to offer.

There were lots of events to participate in such as a weight-lift pull, mud pit, tug-o-war, and of course, lots of trails! The Show N’ Shine Concours allowed everyone to bring out their rig and show them off. There was even a scale city for everyone to drive through and get some great photos - attendees were invited to bring their own scale buildings such as a gas station, grocery store, car wash, and more.

HPI Racing provided great giveaways, such as 2 Venture RTRs and a Hoonicorn Sport 3 RTR. This event draws lots of enthusiasts and it’s a great event for manufacturers to show their products.

One of the best things about events like these is you get to see the creativity of what scale crawling is about. Rarely do you ever see 2 crawlers looking the same. We were able to bring our customized Venture Toyota FJ Cruisers and have fun with everyone. Thank you to Pro-Line for putting on a great event!
