HB Off-Road Drivers at the Reedy Race of Champions

Sun, 1st February 2015

Last week's Reedy Off-Road Race of Champions collected most of the fastest electric off-road racers in the world in one place to kick off the US racing season for 2015. Team HB drivers were there in force, with new signings David Ronnefalk and Drew Moller racing alongside World Champion Ty Tessmann. Here's the collected race reports from Team HB!

Drew's Race Report:

The week started out with three rounds of controlled practice for each class. Both my 2WD and 4WD were dialed in, I was very confident coming into the first day of racing.

2WD was the first class up. I didn’t have the best grid starts and passing cleanly on the track was very difficult to do. I didn’t have the best results in the 2WD portion but I was still very happy considering this was my first time racing invite at the Reedy race and didn’t know what to expect.

After the 2WD portion was over I was relieved because I felt much more comfortable with my D413. I knew going into the initial rounds that I was fast and had the best car out there. I was able to pick up some good points by finishing inside the top five in each run. By the end of the event I had gone from 18th my results and can’t wait till next year. I would like to thank my sponsors for their amazing support; Hot Bodies/HPI Racing, Proline, LRP, KO PROPO, Amain.com, AVID, Nitrotane, Up Grade R/C, Lunsford, and my family.

David's Race Report:

So time for the first trip to the US of this year and the first appearance for me at the Reedy Race of Champions. It was not only going to be the first time with the cars on clay surface, but also first time for me to attend a race in US on a indoor clay track. Got all the cars in good shape before I left home as I was going to meet up with Ty and Drew at IERC Raceway to get some practice together before the race would start.

My trip was shortened with one day as I had a delay on my first flight, which meant that I missed my connection fight in London. Bummer as I was excited to practice! However I got a seat on the first flight in the morning after and made it safe to LAX airport.Practice was good and starting out with a setup close to what Ty ran I made some minor changes to it and felt very comfortable with the car going in to the race. For 2wd I had a couple of different cars, I chose to use the newest version as I felt good with it in practice (maybe wasn´t the best choice looking back afterwards).

On Wednesday we went to the track to set up the pit and check out the track layout. Later in the evening we also got to glue the spec tires for the race to get ready for practice in the next morning.Thursday was going to give us three practice rounds per class. With the track being super slick and slippery in the first few rounds, the discussion was about how many sets of tires you should go with for the race. In 2wd I scrubbed in two pairs of rear tires and one pair for the front. And in 4wd I had two sets ready as well as a new third set if needed.

Changed a few small things on the setup as this layout didn’t have the same fast and sweeping corners, but instead more hairpins than what the IERC track had. The grip level was lower than in practice before the race as well. However both cars felt very good in the end of practice and I was excited to get started.

Friday saw the first day of racing and we were going to have four rounds of 2wd action. Didn’t get the best of starting positions as I would start the four round-s from 6th from 2nd. My My car was fast but a little bit hard to drive, had to be very precise in the jumps to land it safely. Some driver mistakes at the wrong times and some bad luck as well didn’t make my first day a day to remember. Finishing 8th, 5th, 10th (car broke) and 4th in the rounds meant that I was 19th in the standings after the first day of racing. Very disappointed with that of course, crossed my fingers for some good luck and good races for the last two days.

Saturday saw the last two rounds as well as the first two rounds in 4wd in the afternoon. Discussing a little bit together with Torrance after the first day of 2wd, I decided to switch car to a different car for the last two rounds of 2wd, as I had nothing to loose really. My starting positions of the final two rounds were 3rd and 6th. Hopefully I could get some great starts and advance in the standings before going in to 4wd. The car was a lot easier to drive than the new one, it had more grip as well as it landed the big triple jump a little bit more consistent than the YZ-2. The firth round went “OK” and I finished 4th, however some bad luck in the start of the last one meant 8th place.

2wd didn’t go as I wanted, but then it was 4wd time and I was excited for that and wanted to make a good finish to the race. My starting positions in the first two rounds were 1st and 7th. Car was working amazing and super fast, some mistakes on the jumps made up for a place in first round and a 5th place in the second round.

Sunday and the last four rounds of 4wd were on the schedule. With "okay" finishes in the opening two rounds of 4wd I climbed a little bit in the standings and was in 16th going to the last day. My goal was a top 10 finish but it looked like that was going to be hard to do. My starting positions of the day were 1st, 8th, 3rd and 9th. My starting positions of the day were 1st, 8th, 3rd and 9th. In the first one of the day I had a really good race going on, while being in the lead the driver behind me took me out and decided not to wait, I ended up in 4th because of that. In the last three rounds I had some bad luck in one of the races and made a few stupid mistakes as well. So I finished 7th, 4th and 5th in those. Overall I didn’t reach my which was top 10 as I said, but gained a lot of experience from this trip and I will be back stronger next time for sure!

Last but not least I would like to thank the Tessmann family for all their help during the whole week. Had a lot of fun with my new team, Drew and Ty and I am excited to see what we can achieve together this year!

Ty's Race Report:

In 2WD with the new rear geometry that is very close to what the new car will be like, it created a lot of grip, normally in 2WD this is a good thing, but with the spec tire choice and the way the tires were wearing this proved to be a slight disadvantage. We made changes for every run to gain more steering, unfortunately it took until the last run of 2wd to get the car to where we were really on pace. During practice when the track was loose our car was very good but when the grip came up it had too much grip in the rear and not enough in the steering. Can't wait to get our 2WD in our hands.

4WD was really good, by the time it came along we new the grip had come up and we made the appropriate changes. With our experience in 4WD we knew what to change and our car was not only on pace but was very good. Even though having some starts in the rear, Ty ended up with some excellent results in 4WD which pushed him up to 4th overall, unfortunately the finishes in 2wd put him too far behind to challenge for the win.
