Ty Tessmann Dominates the Neo '14!

Tue, 22nd April 2014

Canada's Ty Tessmann had an amazing Easter weekend at the Neo '14 in the UK, leading almost the entire 45-minute A Final to win the main event, plus winning not just the electric buggy race but the Dash for Cash race as well! !

Held every year at Harper Adams University and inviting the world's fastest 1/8th buggy racers, the Neo race is the biggest non-championship off-road race in Europe. Over the years, top racers from all across Europe, the US and even Asia have made the trip to see what all the fuss is about. In the process, the epic racing and parade of the fastest names in racing have made the Neo a 'must attend' race for drivers around the world!

For 2014, a reduced 'Team Tessmann' (usually Ty and both his parents but this time just dad Gord) made the trek from Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada, to Harper Adams University northwest of Birmingham, where a temporary, pupose-built track is built from scratch under a protective roof. It is this battleground that sets the stage for the top racing action at the first major European race of the year for 1/8th off-road fans!

This was Ty's third trip to 'the Neo', and would prove to be a very special weekend indeed!

The practice rounds and the first three runs of qualifying saw Ty and his father tuning in the D812 car (as well as Ty's D812 with Tekno conversion in Electric) to the track and conditions - Easter weekend started off dry and sunny but over the 4 days of the weekend the weather would turn hazy and damp, so racers and engine tuners were kept busy with the changing ambient conditions.

On Day 2 after 3 rounds of qualifying that saw different drivers and cars taking the top spot, Team Tessmann started cranking up the pressure, starting with the 'Dash4Ca$h' race, a single 10-minute race with a fat cash prize! Ty waited for the crashes to sort themselves out and from second place on the track homed in on the leader, who was powerless to stop the young Canadian from running off into the distance. Ty then took his first victory of the Neo weekend!

In Qualifying round 4, Ty started to assert his authority on the track, setting TQ times in both nitro and electric buggy classes:

Ty also set the TQ time in round 5 of nitro qualifying:

Ty's fast times in 2 of the 6 rounds of qualifying would enable him to start in 3rd place for the Final, ahead of several National, European and World Champions.

Neo 14 Qualifying

Before the Nitro Finals could begin, the Electric Finals were run, and Ty dispatched all comers with ease. Ty started from pole and although he was threatened and even passed for the lead after a spill, Ty was able to regain the top spot by the end.

Watch Ty rule the Electric 1/8th Buggy roost with his HB D812 using the Tekno conversion:

After taking two wins in the two races that had run so far, what else was there to do but win the whole thing? Although complete dominance was out of his grasp because he didn't TQ the main nitro class, it would be a brave person to bet against Team Tessmann in the 45-minute A Final, where Ty and his D812 were looking supreme.

Here's the start of the 45-minute A Final!

The remainder of the A Final is right here:

Starting from 3rd on the grid, Ty took an early lead while the other racers squabbled for 2nd place behind him. Not wanting to give Ty an easy win, European Champ David Ronnefalk and World Champ Cody King chased him down, with only Cody succeeding in making a solid pass, having the lead only until a mistake of his own allowed Ty past into the front of the field - a position he would hold until the end of the 45 minutes!

Nitro A Final

Calling this a 'strong weekend' for Ty is a bit like saying Mercedes has an adequate Formula 1 2014 team and car...this was an amazing display for someone at an event they've never been to before, over 4000 miles (6800km) from home!

Top 3

Ty has definitely solidified his name at the top of the rankings of 1/8th buggy racers around the world, and 2014 is certainly looking like his year so far!
