The annual LRP Touring Car Masters was held this past weekend, and along with the gathering of many of the top European racers in electric touring car racing, the LRP-HPI Challenge was organized to run at the same time. Running one of the top pro touring car races in the world and the brilliant LRP-HPI Challenge event at the same time is a normal thing for the LRP TCM, and this year the LRP-HPI Rookie Challenge featured a star from the world of full-size motorsport: Markus Winkelhock!
Markus comes from one of the most famous of German racer dynasties: his father Manfred was succesful in Formula 1 and his uncle Joachim won several touring car championships around the world, as well as multiple wins at the legendary 24 hrs of Le Mans! Markus became an instant F1 legend for leading the extremely wet race at the Nurburgring in 2007, thanks to a brilliant tyre strategy by the Spyker racing team - he led the race in his F1 debut, catapulting him to F1 stardom! Right now Markus races in the fantastis DTM series with the successful Audi factory racing team. He started in 7 races in 2007 and in 2008 finished 12th overall. The LRP-HPI Rookie Challenge set Markus up with a Maverick Strada TC car, which he enjoyed ripping around the track. The car was set up for him to get going, but he provided his own setup data to improve the handling and make the car more suited for his driving style. Overall, Markus enjoyed his time amongst the RC racers! We hope to see him at the track again in the future, and thank him for being so generous with his time.
