For the final time, model touring car racers came to Don Valley Stadium in Sheffield to decide who would walk away the champion of the 2004-2005 British Indoor Winter Series! This final race of the series would be included in the points count, no matter what, with the three best out of the four previous rounds counting towards each racer's total.
A rare appearance from HPI team driver Andy Moore meant Johnny Bowden had to be on top form if he was to maintain his perfect run of form so far in the modified class. Both Andy and Ben Cosgrove had to start from nearly the bottom heat because of their current points totals and while it caused them a little trouble they seemed to get on okay. Ben had a bad run of luck for several qualifying runs and would end up in the C Final, but Andy would storm through the field to claim the top spot after all the qualifying was done. Johnny, not laying back, would qualify immediately behind Andy, setting up an interesting A Final for sure! Although Andy wasn't threatening Johnny's chance at the series championship, Johnny couldn't afford to be slack - with a 7-point lead over David Hall going into the final round, a bad run could threaten a championship win! Johnathan Dronfield wasn't too far behind David, either, so it would be interesting to see if Johnny's cool on-track demeanor would hold up under pressure from Andy, David and Johnathan.
With Andy starting from pole position Johnny sped off after him and after just a couple of laps they were the only two cars splitting off from the pack. The battles going on at the back of the grid weren't too hectic but the driving was lively as the racers scratched to get every point they could. Andy continued leading for several laps until he made a rare mistake and Johnny took the lead for a while with Andy all over his rear bumper. The crowd was thick as they observed the closest modified racing of the series, shouting "oooh's" and "aaah's" as Andy would graze Johnny's bumper going into the big power sweeper just before the start/finish line. Finally Johnny made a mistake of his own and Andy slipped past after being patient for most of the race. It was only a matter of a few laps remaining as Andy held a very defensive position against Johnny's attacks, and across the line they went: Andy, Johnny, Johnathan Dronfield, Tom Stanway (who qualified third in the final round), and David Hall in fifth. It was a nail-biting finish to a great series! Three HPI Pro 4 cars made it into the top 4 positions of the modified class with Johnny Bowden taking the crown! Pro 4's dominated the stock class as well with drivers Darren Ford and Robin Lucas topping the points table! For a more in-depth report and more pics, check out the Mirage Racing website!
