| It was a hot and sunny summer day at the Savage Slam ‘04 at Revelation Raceway in Ontario, California. More than 60 Savages showed up to duel for top honors, with racers coming from as far away as Washington and Nevada to compete. The day started with controlled practice, a quick drivers’ meeting, and then straight into the first of three qualifying rounds. The HPI staff were on hand to help drivers get their trucks dialed in, and had some of the latest Savage bodies and parts on display. R/C Car and Xtreme RC Cars magazines were both on hand for the event, taking notes and photos for magazine coverage. Between the second and third rounds of qualifying a free lunch barbeque was fired up in the pits, and there was a break to raffle off a truckload of prizes from HPI, Airtronics, Hitec and Mechanix Wear. Then the free HPI bodies and HPI hats were handed out to the racers who pre-entered by the deadline. Next on the program…some fun events: a Long Jump Contest, Blind Fold Race, Trophy Dash, group photo, and the Savage Slam Concours. And then back to the third round qualifying to determine who would get the chance to race for the win in the main events. The Revelation Raceway crew quickly sorted out the qualifying times, and then it was time for the main events, with racers battling for 15 minutes in the Savage Stock and Savage Modified A Mains. |

| In the Long Jump Contest a ramp was set up on the back straight and each contestant had 3 tries to make the longest jump. After the dust had settled it was John Schultz taking top honors!
We had 4 teams try for the Blind Fold Race. The rules for this race are: one blindfolded driver, one person person giving directions, and the first team to complete 3 laps wins! Paul Freyre took the early lead and never looked back to take the win! |

| The Concours was a tough event this year with several excellent Savage bodies in attendance. as the photos below show, it was a tough decision for the judges. After some deliberations the top honor finally went to James Grossaint for his cool Bronco! Next was the Trophy Dash, where the top 5 fastest qualifiers duked it out for 5 laps! As the trucks left the start it was Derek Butterfield taking the early lead with the red, white, and blue Bronco. Pre race favorite John Schultz was chasing hard not too far behind. It was on the 4th lap that Derek made a small mistake...which allowed John to pass. In the end John Schultz took top honors with a hard charging Derek Butterfield in a close second. |

| And then it was off to the last qualifier and the last chance to make the A main!
Check out some of the race action!
|
| |
| |
| The first main was the Stock Savage D Main, with Travis Rouse taking the trophy!
In the Stock Savage C main it was a 3 way battle between Rodney O'Francia, Fidel Deanda, and Kyle David. Rodney ended up taking the win by one lap ahead of Fidel and Kyle.
The Stock Savage B main saw several lead changes with 2nd qualifier Dave Becker taking the early lead with top qualifier Shane Curiel right behind. Shane took the lead on lap number 4, the two would trade leads until lap 9 when Drew Cardella made it a 3 way battle. Drew took the lead on lap 15 and never looked back, taking the win from Robert Copeland and Wei Nin Kuo.
In the final Stock Savage A main, pre race favorite John Schultz escaped the first turn pile up to take the early lead. And, except for Chris Nelson taking the lead for one lap on lap number 6, John took it home for a 2 lap win over a hard charging Derek Butterfield.

| The Modified Savage B main saw a fast and furious battle between Martin Nelson, Gilberto Pena, and James Shirder. After the dust had settled it was Martin Nelson taking the win over Gilberto Pena and James Shirder.
The final event was the Modified Savage A Main. John Schultz was once again the pre race favorite. John took the early lead and was seemingly on his way to the race win. Further back there was furious chase led by Fredy Lagunas. Then on lap 17 it all went wrong for John Schultz when he ran out of fuel, and as his pit crew frantically tried to restart his engine, the rest of the pack was closing in. Lap 18 saw Fredy Lagunas took the lead, with John Schultz's crew able to restart his engine, the battle was on. It was a tense chase for the lead as Fredy drove hard, with John chasing even harder right behind. The gap was coming down, but not fast enough as Fredy Lagunas took the win over John Schultz, the gap was a scant 2 seconds after 15 minutes of racing!
The HPI Employee Challenge Race saw an impressive race win by R&D Team Member Greg Santos. Ed Pingol took the early lead, but relinquished it on lap 3 to a hard charging Greg Santos. Right behind the leader was a fierce battle between Robert Chang and Fred Williams, with Robert eventually coming in 2nd and Fred taking 3rd place. |
