ANY RACER CAN ENTER!
Welcome to the 2003 HPI Challenge World Finals! This year's race will
be held in fabulous Las Vegas, Nevada, a wonderful family vacation destination
and great party town! We hope to see you there with your family and friends.
Please Take Notice
World Final Rules
The HPI Challenge World Finals use some different rules than the normal
HPI Challenge USA series rules. The main difference in the rules
is that the only option parts that are allowed are HPI and Hot Bodies
options, except where otherwise noted. Also, some racing classes
that are present at other HPI Challenge events are not being raced during
the World Finals (Rally, Truck, Savage). These are the only classes we
will have racing: Micro Pro, Electric Sport, Electric Pro, Nitro Stock,
Nitro Modified and Super Nitro Modified. All classes have different rules
than the standard HPI Challenge rules. All classes that allow option parts
must use HPI or Hot Bodies option parts. If you plan to attend, MUST read
over the relevant class rules very carefully to make sure your car is
in compliance. Because of the number of racers we will have and the tight
schedule we will not be able to make allowances or exceptions for any
racers.
Spec/Handout Tire
Most classes have a handout tire: the #4763 Advan 33R 24mm belted tire
for 1/10 scale classes, the #4598 33R Racing Slick belted tire for Super
Nitro. Each entry will receive ONE set of spec tires (2 pairs, or 4 tires)
on our Friday practice day. Racers must supply their own HPI wheels and
inserts. Inserts may be any manufacturer's insert. Additional spec tires,
appropriate for the class, may be brought by racer but must be taken to
tech personnel in the original unopened package to be marked. We recommend
that racers put CA (cyanoacrylate) glue over the marking while gluing
the tires onto the wheels, and let the glue dry before running the tires.
Tires are not to be modified in any way - removing the belt or cutting/grinding/truing
the tire is not allowed. Tires must have visible grooves/treads visible
at all times. Tire additives are not allowed, the traction for the track
will be very high. Only motor cleaner such as #9062 HPI Nitro Cleaner
is allowed, to clean the tires.
Racers in the Micro and Endurance class must provide their own HPI tires,
HPI wheels and inserts.
Handout Motor
Electric Sport racers will use a spec, sealed endbell 20-turn motor that
will be handed out Friday at the event. Oiling the bushings, using commutator
drops and any gearing is allowed, however the brushes and springs may
not be changed or modified (apart from normal break-in and running), and
the commutator may not be trued. Modifying the motor can is not allowed
(the motor can must remain intact in all respects). The wires and connectors
may be changed. We recommend that a break-in period be done on the motor
before installing it into the car. For tuning tips on sealed endbell motors,
see
this link.
Handout Fuel
PLEASE NOTE that Nitro class racers will be using a handout fuel during
all qualifiers and main event races, but not during practice. The handout
fuel will be HPI 20% Power Fuel. Racers will be given the handout fuel
during controlled practice, qualifying heat races and main event races.
For open practice or for the 2.4hr Endurance Challenge, any fuel may be
used.
Parts Support
A local hobby shop (Hobbytown USA) will be on-site at the track with a
parts supply for the racers. If you require a special ordered part or
equipment, or need extra tires or spare parts, feel free to call them
at 702.889.9554. Let them know you will be traveling and with sufficient
notice they should be able to acquire whatever you may need.

Personal Transponders
All classes will be able to use the AMBrc personal transponders. All cars
in the 2.4hr Endurance Challenge MUST use a personal transponder. All
racers are encouraged to have at least one to use on their cars. AMBrc
personal transponders will be available for sale at the track, however
we will have a limited supply.
Race Track Information
We will be racing at the Silverbowl R/C track in east Las Vegas, a permanent
r/c track facility with lights, AC power, plenty of pit space, timing
tower, smooth racing surface and more! This is a smooth, high-bite asphalt
outdoor track. Sugar water will be sprayed on the asphalt to enhance traction.
For racers in the Nitro Modified class, we suggest foam tires ranging
from 42-45 front shore and 35-37 rear shore. For racers in rubber tire
classes, the 33R tires work best with medium and soft inserts (HPI orange
or green inserts).
Track size: The Silverbowl track is a 1/8 scale track. The only class
that will use the full size of the track will be the 2.4hr Endurance Challenge.
The full size track will NOT be used for the rest of the racing classes.
Starting Friday, the track will be shortened to the 1/10 scale size track
and will remain this way for the rest of the weekend.
The address of the track is:
6800 East Russel Road
Las Vegas, NV
Click
here for a map from the track to the Alexis Park hotel, right next to
the Strip!
Food will be available at the track, although you are welcome to bring
your own or leave to get your own food.
See the track picture below. The track will be sprayed with cola water
for traction additive. The 2.4hr Endurance Challenge will run on the full-length
track (280 ft/85m main straight), all other races will be on a shortened
version of this track (200 ft/64m main straight).
The track will be open until Wednesday night. Anyone is allowed to run
on the track, however it will not be swept, sprayed or prepared in any
way until Thursday, and the lights will not be turned on at night. On
Thursday the only racers allowed to run on the track will be the Endurance
Challenge racers. A one hour practice session starts at noon and ends
at 1 PM sharp. The 2.4hr Endurance Challenge will start at 1:45 PM. After
the Endurance Challenge racing is finished Thursday, no practice will
be allowed and the track layout will be changed.
Practice on Friday starts at 7:00 AM and ends at 11:30. Micro practice
is from 11:30 to noon. Controlled practice starts at 1 PM after the driver
meeting.
Electrical cords
The track has AC power outlets, however you will need to supply your own
extension cords and 6-plug outlets. Most racers should be fine with 25’
or 50’ cords and one 6-plug outlet per person.
Canopies
We are unable to provide canopy covers for the racers, however portable
canopies like EZ-Ups are allowed, provided they are weighed down with
sufficient weight to prevent them from being blown over. Use ropes attached
to sandbags (find a Home Depot, Lowe’s store or Army/Navy surplus
store) or weightlifting weights to secure your canopy against the wind.
At night you must take down the fabric top if you plan to leave the canopy
in place. Be aware that Clark County, HPI Racing and the race organizers
are not responsible for damages from windblown canopies.
Use sunscreen, a wide-brim hat, long sleeve shirts and long pants to
protect yourself from the sun.
If you want additional help with suggested setups or other issues relating
to the race, you can call Alan Ross (Joker to his friends) at 702.813.1772
or 702.838.7784

General Rules
- Sportsmanship. All racers will be reminded that
the primary purpose of the HPI Challenge series is to have fun. Aggressive
driving, "bending" or breaking of the rules, unsportsmanlike
attitudes and similar acts will not be tolerated. Help your fellow racer,
let faster drivers pass you cleanly and represent yourself in the best
manner possible and everyone will have a fun weekend. Remember that
you are representing yourself, your friends and your home country or
state to all other racers and spectators.
- Spectators. There will be many spectators around
the track at any given time. Please help race control by asking children,
parents and other spectators to stand back behind the marked lines for
their own safety.
- Practice. Open (uncontrolled) practice will be available
only on Friday before noon. Frequency clips must be used. Clips will
be available for all 75 mHz, 40 mHz and 27 mHz radio frequencies. Racers
are to practice for one battery pack or one tank of fuel only.
There will be many racers wanting to practice so there must be some
courtesy shown your fellow participants. The last 30 minutes of open
practice will be reserved for Micro racers only. Controlled practice
will start at 1 PM, or after all radios have been collected for radio
impound. Controlled practice will follow in the exact format of qualifying
and use the qualifying heat order. Racers must go through technical
inspection, leave their cars at the post-race tech inspection table,
turn marshal after they run, etc. The period between each race during
practice will be the same length of time between races during qualifying.
You will be practicing with the same people you will be racing against
for at least 2 qualifiers so this is an opportunity to try setups and
learn to drive with your fellow racers before actually qualifying.
- One Minute Grace Period. Each racer will have a two
one-minute grace periods in each class they race in: one grace period
for qualifying, one grace period for main events. In the event of a
racer being late to join their race they may use their grace period
to delay the race start by one minute so they may join. Only one grace
period may be used per race. Racers may not use their grace period to
delay the race for another racer. At the end of the grace period, the
race must start; any late racers may join at any time. This will encourage
racers to be on time and ready for their races.
- Re-sort. There will be a re-sort after qualifying
Saturday, to place racers with similar qualifying times in the same
heats.
- Radio impound. Racers get their radio after technical
inspection. Frequencies will be confirmed at this time to ensure racers
are on the correct transmitter/receiver frequency. Radio checks may
be made during the race day with the approval of radio impound personnel.
Radios will be collected each morning and returned each evening after
all racing is completed.
- Technical inspections before each race. All cars
are required to be inspected before each race. Racers with illegal cars
are not allowed to get their radios. Racers are encouraged to bring
their cars to tech inspection before their race time to make sure their
cars are legal. Illegal items or cars that are missed for one race does
not mean that they are legal for other races.
- Technical inspections after each race. All cars
and radios from each race must be placed on the post-race inspection
table and the racers must quickly go directly to the track to turn marshal.
Inspectors may look over the cars on the post-race inspection table
and may issue disqualifications for any missing or illegal cars or any
illegal items.
- Turn marshals. Standard turn marshalling duties
(turn marshal the race after yours). Turn marshal locations will be
marked on the track. Remember to turn marshal the way you would want
to be turn marshaled yourself!
- Damaged cars on the track. Cars with loose exhausts,
broken parts, uncontrollable cars, etc., must be taken off the track
so as not to damage other cars. Racers who do not remove their broken
or uncontrollable cars off the track within 1 lap will be disqualified
for that race. If the car is not removed within 2 laps the fastest qualifying
time will be reduced by 1 lap. Repairs must be made in pit area or off
the track. Turn marshals are not to repair cars.
- Accessory parts. These parts are allowed: spur gears,
pinion gears, turnbuckles, hinge pins, screws, ball studs, motor heatsinks,
fuel tubing or pipes, fuel filters, air filters (Nitro Stock must use
stock air filter), glow plugs (Nitro Stock must use standard glow plugs),
washers, locknuts, hex hubs, wheel spacers, diff grease, antenna/ariel
tubes and mounts, battery retainers, body pins, transponder holders,
shock spacers. Any unlisted parts may be allowed on a case-by-case basis
after confirming them with the tech inspectors.
- No structural modifications allowed. This includes
making new parts, re-engineering any parts or systems on the car, drilling
new mounting holes, modifying parts to change any characteristics of
the car, etc.
- Body rules. Any HPI body is allowed. Windows must
be clear or lightly tinted. Body openings: front – 50mm maximum
circle diameter; side – front side windows may be cut out; rear
– rear window may be cut out; holes for glow plug, carb and antenna
access should not exceed 20mm. Grilles and air ducts on bodies may not
be cut out. Tape may be used to cover illegal cutouts. Bodies must be
cut on the body cut line, not above (for example, rear bumpers). Bodies
must have 3 number decals (windshield, left and right). Micro bodies
must have at least 1, on the windshield. No rollover antennas (except
for HPI titanium antenna set on Micro cars).
- Tires. Endurance Challenge and Micro class racers
will not have a handout tire and will supply their own tires. One set
of rubber tires will be handed out to each racer in each class, provided
with entry fee. Any HPI wheel and any manufacturer’s insert may
be used. Nitro Modified racers will be allowed to use any manufacturer's
foam tires (maximum width: 26mm front, 30mm rear). Any HPI wheel and
any manufacturer’s insert may be used. Four tires will be handed
out to each racer in this class. Extra #4763 spec tires may be brought
to the event by the racer but must be brought to tech personnel in original
unopened package to be marked. Tires are not to be modified in any way
- removing the belt or cutting/grinding/truing the tire is not allowed.
Tires must have visible grooves/treads visible at all times. Tire additives
are not allowed, the traction for the track will be very high. Only
motor cleaner such as #9062 HPI Nitro Cleaner is allowed, to clean the
tires.
- Engines. See specific class rules for Nitro Stock,
Nitro Modified and Super Nitro Modified classes.
- Fuel. HPI Power Fuel 20% nitro content will be used
for all Nitro racing classes, except for the 2.4hr Endurance Challenge.
Fuel will be handed out to each racer or his/her pit person before each
qualifying race and main event. A limited amount of fuel will be available
to racers during Friday (practice day) to help break in the engine to
the fuel. Any fuel will be allowed for the Endurance Challenge, this
fuel will be supplied by the race team.
- Transponders. AMBrc "personal" transponders
will be supported at this race. Transponders may be brought to the race
or purchased from the race director. We highly recommend that racers
use personal transponders to help run the race meeting at maximum efficiency.
Personal transponders are required for the Endurance Challenge.
- Sponsored drivers. Sponsored drivers are not allowed
in the Electric Sport and Nitro Stock classes. This includes any individual
who has received discount or free parts from any R/C-related retailer
or manufacturer in the past 6 months, as well as employees of any R/C-related
retailer or manufacturer.
- Racers who competed in the HPI Challenge European or Asian Finals
will be able to use option parts and accessories that are allowed at
these finals which may not otherwise be allowed at the World Finals.
For example, Nosram options, etc. This will be allowed on a case-by-case
basis after confirmation with the HPI Challenge Europe and Japan Final
coordinators.
- Commercial availability of option parts. All HPI
and Hot Bodies option parts used must be commercially available in the
racer's home country. This allows all racers an equal opportunity to
purchase legal parts.
