Something that we hadn¹t done before was a concours event. "When you see 200 R/C cars lined up in front of you, it quickly becomes apparent EXACTLY how many people are really here and the weekend we have in front of us," said Bill Stevenson. This is where the mayor of Grove City got to see how this event fit into the city¹s annual 'Arts in the Alley' festival. "The (racers) really put a lot of time into these things," said one judge. "I was really amazed with some of them."
While there may have been 200 cars, everyone's eye was on the "Spawn" Super Nitro. Not only was the detail of the paint exquisite, the addition of a functioning door on a hidden servo that also turned the drivers head, did just that to the judges. "Every year there is one car that EVERYONE knows is going to win," noted Hal. The judges were given some brief instruction on what they were supposed to be looking for, and off they went. One racer noted, "There are three non-R/C people judging thousands of hours of work collectively. I hope they know what they are doing." Evidentially, they knew EXACTLY what they were doing.
The 10 finalists were set aside, and the difficult task of narrowing it down to 3 was at hand. Nobody had any doubt who the winner was going to be, but the runners-up were tough to pick out of the remaining 9 cars. The crowd was pleased with the selections that were made by the judges. A few electric guys (myself included) would have liked to see at least ONE electric car in the final three, but nobody was bitter. The competition was just that stiff!
