WELCOME TO THE 2001 HPI CHALLENGE
RACE SERIES!
Thank you for your participation in the HPI Challenge! This series
is quickly growing in popularity around the world because of its exposure
to spectators, fun for racers and excellent prizes for each participant.
The primary ambition of the HPI
Challenge series of races is to promote the radio control hobby to people
who have previously had no little experience watching or driving R/C cars.
We also want each participant, whether they are a racer, pit person, family
member of a racer, organizer or spectator, to have as much fun as possible.
Please read over the rules below;
you will be expected to understand them when the HPI Challenge comes to
a location near you. These rules are not meant to intimidate racers
into not participating. The rules are in place to keep the racing
as even and as fair as possible. If there are any questions see the HPI
personnel at the track before racing.
ADDITIONAL RACE CLASSES FOR
2001
Participants in the 2000 HPI Challenge USA series will notice that
a few rule changes have taken effect for 2001. The majority of these rules
concern adding new "exhibition" classes for Electric Rally,
Super Nitro Rally and HPI truck racers, as well as homologating the HPI
Challenge USA series rules with rules used throughout the HPI Challenge
races in Europe.
SPORTSMANSHIP
Because we are trying to attract new spectators and hobbyists, good
sportsmanship is a required attribute of all HPI Challenge participants.
Proper manners and good sportsmanship
are expected of all drivers at all times while participating in any HPI
Challenge event. Because we are promoting the hobby to people who are
not familiar with the R/C hobby, it is important to understand that general
bad behavior (cursing, intentional bad driving, etc.) will not be accepted
and can result in a competitor being penalized, disqualified or even asked
to leave in extreme cases.
Good sportsmanship includes:
- Helping out a racer who appears
to have trouble (lending a set of radio crystals, tool, etc.)
- Telling drivers on the stand
when it is safe to pass your car on the track
- Thank racers for moving over
if you are lapping them
- Don't try to race against the
leader of a race if you are going a lap down
- Pitting for a Nitro racer who
does not have a pit person
- Volunteer turn marshaling
- Helping set up or tear down
the track (the race organizers are already very busy)
- Fix the track between races
- Pick up after yourself to keep
the pit area clean, and help others keep their area neat
- REMEMBER THE GOLDEN RULE:
Treat other racers just like you would want to be treated!
Bad sportsmanship includes:
- Turning on a radio
at any time without a radio clip or during racing
- Running a car in
the parking lot area, outside of the racetrack area
- Looking for ways
to bend or break the rules to your advantage.
- Bad driving (intentional hitting,
over-aggressive driving, cutting the track, etc.)
- Driving an out of control car
(missing a wheel, unglued tire, missing a wing, etc.) and ignoring the
race announcer's call to stop your car
- Coaching or talking to a driver
that is participating in a race (Cheering is, of course, allowed and
encouraged!)
- Yelling or cursing on the driver
stand, in the pit area or at other drivers, HPI or race personnel, etc.
If there is a dispute between
drivers it must be brought to the attention of the race director or HPI
personnel. The officials at the track will do their best to resolve any
issue to the satisfaction of the racers, the rules and the general rules
of sportsmanship.
SPONSORED DRIVERS
Sponsored drivers are not allowed in the RS4 Electric Sport or RS4
Nitro Stock classes, no exceptions! "Sponsored drivers" are defined
as any person who receives (or has received in the 6 months prior to the
race) discounted or free material from any hobby- or R/C-related company
or retailer. HPI employees,
Factory Team Drivers or Sponsored Drivers are not allowed to compete in
any class of the HPI Challenge USA series.

OPEN PRACTICE
Practice on the track will be allowed until noon on Saturday. If the
track is available and the race organizer allows it, participants may
practice on the track before Saturday. Contact the track, shop, club or
the person organizing the event at the race location to confirm you will
be allowed to practice Friday.
If there are problems with too
many cars on the track during open practice, the race announcer may announce
a timed practice that will allow separate practice times for electric
cars and Nitro cars. The practice times will be based on the ratio of
electric cars to Nitro cars. For example, 80 Nitro racers and 40 electric
racers will get 40 minutes for the Nitro cars and trucks, and 20 minutes
for electric cars.
During open practice, racers will
be encouraged to have their cars inspected before racing begins. This
will help make sure all drivers are within the rules set forth by their
racing class.
DRIVER'S MEETING
At noon on Saturday, all participants in the HPI Challenge will be
expected to attend the drivers' meeting. A quick summary of the rules
will be covered, and specific rule questions may be asked. Drivers and
their pit crew will be expected to understand each rule by the time they
leave the driver's meeting.
CONCOURS CHALLENGE
The HPI Concours Challenge/Car lineup will take place approximately
five minutes after the driver's meeting is completed. All competitors
will be encouraged to place their cars on the longest straight portion
of the track for picture opportunities, while judges decide the top ten
best cars for the HPI Concours Challenge. Cars will be judged on a Best
Overall rating, including color, masking, detail, and accessories like
wheel choice, interior sets and other detail. HPI car chassis and bodies
are required. HPI wheels and tires are not required, but are encouraged.
Racers are encouraged to paint their own bodies, not paying someone to
do the job. Judges will be chosen by HPI personnel and may include HPI
personnel, race officials, spectators, etc.
From the main group of cars, the
best 10 to 12 cars will be picked by the judges. This group will be narrowed
to a total of three. Judges will then decide the overall best car. The
top three cars will earn prizes from HPI, with a kit and large trophy
awarded to the overall winning car's owner.
The winning car body must be raced
in at least one heat or main event. Accessories like interior body sets
may be removed before running. A
winning car body may win only once in any HPI Concours Challenge.
RACE FORMAT
All racers will have the opportunity to practice before and after
each day's racing. In all classes except for the Rally classes, every
racer will get three qualifying races to get as many laps as possible
around the track in five minutes. After three rounds of qualifying races
all racers in each class will be sorted in order, with the fastest driver
earning the top qualifier spot. Drivers with the most laps in five minutes
will be ranked first, with the lowest race times breaking any ties. Racers
in both Rally classes will run a series of "heads up" races that count
towards a points total. The driver with the most points at the end of
the weekend will be announced as the winner. There will be no throw-outs.
Two qualifying rounds will be
run on Saturday, with one round run on Sunday. After the final qualifying
round on Sunday, a lunch break/practice session of approximately one hour
will take place. Main events will take place after the break and will
run until completed. The prize presentation will be made approximately
fifteen minutes after the completion of the last final race.
PRIZES
Every participant who pays their entry fee and races in at least one
race will receive one HPI body and one HPI hat, regardless of how many
classes they enter. Hats will be passed out during racing on Saturday.
Bodies will be passed out either during racing or after the prize presentation
on Sunday. Racers in the
Nitro Stock class will receive one additional HPI body, for a total of
two. Racers will be able to choose which body they receive from a list
of available bodies. HPI personnel choose bodies to bring at least two
weeks before each event and cannot exchange bodies for any racers. Bodies
are available on a limited, first-come, first-serve basis - once one style
of body is gone we cannot make exchanges.
Race Prizes
Electric Sport, Electric Pro, Nitro Stock, Nitro Modified, Super Nitro
Modified: The winner of the A Main in each of these classes will receive
a custom 2001 HPI Challenge trophy and a free HPI kit. The rest of the
A Main (2nd through 10th position) racers in these classes will receive
custom 2001 HPI Challenge plaques. Racers
who finish their main event (B Main, C Main, etc.) in first, second or
third place will also receive a custom 2001 HPI Challenge plaque to commemorate
their achievement. The overall winner of each of these classes will also
be entered into the drawing for a free plane ticket to Europe for our
2001 HPI Challenge World Finals. See below for details.
Electric Rally, Super Nitro
Rally, Nitro Truck: The top ten racers in each of these Exhibition
classes will receive a custom 2001 HPI Challenge plaque to commemorate
their achievement. If ten or more racers enter in each one of these classes,
the overall winner will receive a free HPI kit.
Trophy winners will not receive
a plaque in addition to the trophy. Racers who win more than one class
will receive one trophy and kit for each win. Kits are predetermined for
each class; winners cannot choose which kit they will receive.
QUALIFICATION FOR A TRIP
TO THE 2001 HPI CHALLENGE WORLD FINALS
The winner of each class not designated as an "Exhibition"
class (see above) will be entered into a drawing for a plane ticket
to Europe, to represent the United States at the third annual HPI Challenge
World Finals. The only way to enter this drawing is to win a qualifying
class at any 2001 HPI Challenge USA race. Racers have the opportunity
to win as many classes as they wish, and may also participate in as
many HPI Challenge races as they wish. However, racers can only race
in one class at the HPI Challenge World Finals; if a racer's name is
drawn two or more times for a trip (from winning in two or more classes
at any of the races), that racer must choose only one class in which
to race. A different name will be drawn for the second and consecutive
classes if the same person's name is drawn more than once.
At the end of the 2001 HPI
Challenge USA series (September), a drawing will be held to see who
will represent HPI USA and compete with the world's best HPI drivers!
The winner of each drawing
will win:
One reserved "invitational" spot in their chosen class
One round trip plane ticket to Europe!
If the drawing winner from each
class is unable to confirm their availability within 10 days after the
drawing, another drawing will take place to choose another winner from
the same class. Hotel, rental car and food costs are the responsibility
of the winning racer.
Racers who won an event but
not the drawing will have an entry spot reserved for them at the HPI
Challenge World Finals event, however, their ticket will not be provided
by HPI USA. Racers who attend the World Finals from the USA may be able
to run in more than one class if they wish - confirmation will be determined
by the World Final race organizer.
GENERAL RULES - APPLY TO ALL
CLASSES
Confirmations of rules can be attained and confirmed by Frank McKinney
- the HPI Challenge USA Coordinator. Any
infringement of the HPI Challenge Rules can result in at least a warning
and/or time penalty to a racer's best qualifying time. Serious
breaches of the HPI Challenge Rules, general bad behavior or foul language
during the weekend could result in a competitor being disqualified and
asked to leave the meeting. Warnings
can be issued by Frank McKinney or by the Race Director(s). ONLY
Frank McKinney can confirm penalties. If you have a dispute, please see
Frank McKinney immediately.
Because these rules apply
to the HPI Challenge, we expect the following parts used in the races
to be HPI-brand parts:
- car kit
- Tires
- Wheels
- Inserts
- Bodyshells
- Wings (must be a standard wing used on original bodyshell)
Any brand of the following miscellaneous
parts may be used by competitors in the HPI Challenge USA series, because
we understand that they do not make any performance difference in the
performance of the cars:
- Spur gears (for Electric Sport, Rally and Pro classes only)
- Pinion gears (for Electric Sport, Rally and Pro classes only)
- Turnbuckles
- Screws
- Ball cups and rod ends
- Fuel tubing
- Fuel filters
- Antenna tubes
- Antenna mounts
- Body pins
- Shock spacers
- similar items that do not affect performance, to be determined on
a case-by-case basis
Specific exceptions or additions
to these rules will be noted in the specific class rules (see below).
The following part may not be
used on any car competing in the HPI Challenge series:
- Electronic Gyroscopes
SUBSTITUTE DRIVERS
Substitute drivers are not allowed in any qualification or main event
race. An immediate disqualification from the race will result.
NITRO CAR CLASS RULES
These rules apply specifically
to the Nitro car classes because of their unique nature that sets them
apart from Electric cars.
LOOSE EXHAUSTS
Any Nitro car that has a loose muffler, header or exhaust that is causing
excessive noise will be asked to pull into the pit lane immediately
for repair. This is a standard race rule that most racers recognize.
Repairs must happen in the pit lane or off the racing area by a racer,
or a loss of one lap in that race will occur. If the car does not have
the exhaust system repaired within one lap of the race director's warning,
a loss of one qualifying lap in that race can occur. If the car does
not have the exhaust system repaired within two laps of the race director's
warning, the racer will be black-flagged and disqualified from that
round of racing.
PIT AREA
The pit area must be kept clear of anyone who is not a racer or
pit person for the race that is on the track. Please help us accomplish
this by asking spectators and other racers to stand away from the area.
PIT STOPS
Pit stops to refuel Nitro cars and trucks must be completed in the
pit area of the track, which will be designated for all drivers during
the driver's meeting. For safety reasons, refueling and repairs must
be done with the car completely off the racing surface and behind the
pit area's outer wall. A warning will be given to pit persons who do
not comply with this rule. On a second or further offense a penalty
of 10 seconds will be applied retroactively (after the race is completed)
to any car that is not fueled properly.
All Nitro classes that run 10-minute
final races will be required to have one pit stop. If a fuel stop is
not required, the car must be picked up off the track surface for at
least 3 seconds. A race organizer or HPI representative will be designated
to watch the pit area during each A Main. A penalty of one lap will
be applied retroactively (after the race is completed) to any car that
does not make a pit stop.
RACE STARTS
Nitro class racers
will have the starting procedures for the final race explained during
the driver's meeting. Because different tracks and clubs use different
methods (flag, pitmen, gridding, etc.) to start their races, we will
comply with their standard starts.
TECHNICAL INSPECTIONS
After each qualifying and main race:
- drivers will turn in
their cars and radios to the technical inspection tables
- remove their transponders and
- proceed directly to the race track and their marked positions for turn
marshalling.
Every car must be inspected after
each race or the car will be disqualified from that race. Drivers that
do not finish or start their designated race must still turn their cars
in for inspection. Inspection of each car will start only after the start
of the following race. All cars will be available for pick-up and return
to the pit area only after the following race is complete. If detailed
inspections are required, the drivers involved will receive their cars
as quickly as possible.
"STRUCTURAL MODIFICATIONS"
All HPI Challenge classes have rules that prohibit structural modifications.
This includes, but is not limited to:
- Altering the position of the fuel tank, except for what is provided
on HPI option parts
- Using a lowered fuel tank
- Using a larger fuel tank
- Modifying the upper deck or creating a custom upper deck to alter belt
and/or fuel tank position
- Changing the wheelbase of any kit other than Pro 3, Nitro MT, Super
Nitro or Super Nitro Rally beyond the options provided by the kit
- Changing the position of the servos in any kit (i.e., mounting the steering
servo on the Nitro RS4 RTR on the main chassis)
- Using custom parts that alter the suspension geometry beyond that provided
by HPI option parts
BODIES
Bodies used for the HPI Challenge are expected to comply with a few
general rules; apart from these rules, the bodies may be run as you wish.
- HPI bodies only
- The rear bumper or tail area of the body may not be cut out above the
bottom molded cut line
- The front windshield opening for Nitro cars may not be larger than a
2 inch (50mm) diameter circle (2 inches or 50mm wide in any direction)
- The front windshield opening for Nitro trucks may not be larger than
1/2 the windshield area
- Reasonably sized holes are allowed for glow plug, carburetor screw and
fuel tank cap access; holes larger than 15mm-20mm are to be discouraged
- The front, rear and sides may not be cut out above the bottom molded
cut line
- Transponders may be required to be mounted in the clear windshield area
of each car body for quicker removal; this is an optional rule and will
be announced during the driver's meeting
TURN MARSHALLING
Turn marshaling is a basic duty of all racers and is generally considered
a chore that must be dealt with. However, it is required and expected
of all racers The basic rules of turn marshaling below apply to all R/C
racing events and are expected to be followed.
Things expected of turn marshals
- Turn marshals are expected
to marshal cars the way they would want to be marshalled in a race.
(The Golden Rule)
- Immediately after finishing
a race, each racer must leave their car and radio at the technical
inspection table and go to their section of the race track to prepare
for the next race. Delays make the race day longer for everyone.
- Arguments or rules questions
will be settled only after a racer has completed their turn marshalling
duties.
- "Hustle", or going
as quickly as possible to a flipped car's position, is the best way
to demonstrate good turn marshalling.
- Wait for any nearby car still
racing to pass before crossing a section of track to retrieve a stuck
car.
- Ignore yells from the driver
stand.
- Always pay attention to your
section of the track.
- Do NOT attempt to repair
cars that are damaged (except for a stuck body) - just shut them off
and set the car on its side, off the race track surface.
- Keep spectators and children
off the racing surface at all times.
- If a racer is unable to turn
marshal, another racer may be a substitute.
Racers in the last heat or main
event in any round will turn marshal the first race of the round. If enough
racers agree, we can have the Nitro racers marshal the Nitro classes,
and the Electric racers marshal the Electric classes.
Prohibited turn marshal activities:
- Delaying the start
of the next race by going to their pit area, talking with friends, etc.
- Refusing to turn
marshal
- Leaving the track before the
race announcer calls out the end of the race and all racers finish their
last lap.
- Watching a close race battle
and not their section of the track.
- Attempting to repair any car
(except for turning off broken/runaway cars or repairing body damage).
- Sitting down, eating, drinking,
smoking, talking on a mobile phone, talking, etc.
RADIO IMPOUND
Circumstances may require that radio transmitters be held by race officials
until the drivers in each heat or final require them to race. The process
of impounding radios will be explained to all racers during the driver's
meeting.
PENALTIES
Actual penalties beyond verbal warnings are extremely rare at most racing
events. The HPI Challenge rules exist to serve as a basis for fair, fun
and competitive racing, not as a way to arbitrarily penalize racers. With
this in mind, these rules must be in place should any questions of legality
or sportsmanship come up. In these situations, HPI and race personnel
will use the following system of warnings and penalties for all rules
and sportsmanship situations:
- Drivers will be warned on their
first offense.
- On a second offense, the driver
will receive a time penalty of 10 seconds on their race time for that
round of racing.
- A third offense will disqualify
that driver from that round of racing.
- Any further offense will result
in disqualification from the event, and the driver will be asked to
leave the event grounds.
- Penalties that are already
part of a specific set of rules (such as pit stops, loose tuned pipes,
etc.) will be used in lieu of the above penaly procedures.
- The only exception to these
rules is that during post-race technical inspections for the main events,
a driver who breaks a technical rule (pertaining to motor, engine, body,
tire, chassis, etc.) or fails to complete their turn marshaling duties
will be retroactively disqualified from their main event and automatically
finish last in their main event.
BRING THESE RULES WITH YOU
TO THE RACE
This will help us avoid any confusion and help to keep everyone using
the same rules throughout the event.
Thanks for attending the 2001
HPI Challenge race series, good luck and always have fun racing!
