The Concours Challenge is usually the toughest part of the weekend, because the judges have to take into account the paint job, quality of the masking, color combinations and other details, as well as things like brake rotors (now almost required to make it into the top 3), lights (a nice accessory but not required), roll bars, driver figures and other things. For this weekend, Hobbytown USA of Mequon owner Scott Earnst, Troy Lyman of HPI and Frank McKinney of HPI were the judges.

It was kind of easy to pick out the cars that people had really spent time on, and with the partly cloudy skies the headlights on several of the cars stood out very well!

Several of the early promising cars:

After looking over the lineup of cars, the judges picked out about ten cars to be finalists in the judging. Then the hard part came - picking the top 3 and the winner!

In Third Place:

Brian Meyers from Silvis, Illinois, had a beautiful Dodge Stratus body painted up, using Fluorescent Green (all paints from Pactra spray cans) and Daytona Yellow paint for the flames, trimmed with Fluorescent Red, with a Candy Blue rear end. Checkers around the rear of the car were Fluorescent Green with black Cobweb spray for a mottled effect that set off the flames very nicely.

And in Second Place:

T.J. Wilcheck, a racer that we first met at our Ohio HPI Challenge, arrived with a superb concept paint job on his Super Nitro RS4. The "rocket" paint scheme really matched the lines of the BMW V12 LMR perfectly, with "warp nacelles" over the rear wheel humps and shading along every contour of the body. Wonderful airbrush and paintbrush work went into this great-looking body.

Finally...First Place!

Out of Dayton, Ohio, Chris Lee had a great-looking Super Nitro RS4 with the Corvette C5-R body. With the Daytona Yellow (all paints from Pactra spray cans) and Outlaw Black main areas of paint, the Racing Red stripe was a very nice contrast. A RAM light kit was set inside a custom made enclosure in the front headlights, and an opaque plastic sheet covered clear lights in the tail light area for a great 3D effect. Chris also had a roll bar inside the cockpit, window netting, tow hooks front and rear, and disk brake rotors and calipers, with the rotors spinning with the wheels. Overall, this was a clear winner in sheer detail alone!

Congratulations to our top 3 finalists in our Concours Challenge!

Second place T.J. Wilcheck, first place Chris Lee, third place Brian Meyers
