Dennis Young of the Tri-State
R/C Auto Racers started the main events after a short practice session
in the early afternoon of Sunday, August 27.
All of the main events were posted
long before the races actually started, so racers could check their start
times and see who they would be racing against. The first races up were
the Electric RS4 racers, then all the Nitro classes. All the A mains ran
last, with the Nitro A Mains running for ten minutes. The Proceed exhibition
class ran a 15 minute main.

 The
Electric RS4 A Main got through the first corner okay, but this time it
was the second corner that got most of the field turned around. Luckily
the TQ, Bill Henn, was able to escape without injury and took off with
Josh Grear and Brad Johnson chasing him. Guy Slagle and Mike Slaughter
passed Brad, though, and started battling with each other. Sean Brandon
started battling with Brad for fifth spot, but Sean ended up with the
upper hand after a few laps. Although Josh was making a hard push to catch
Bill, it was Bill, Josh and Sean in the first three spots

 As
expected, the Nitro RS4 Box Stock A Main provided the closest racing of
the day! It was local racers Mike Huddleson and Kevin Roberson who had
nabbed the top two qualifying spots, and they would battle throughout
the whole race. Mike let Kevin slip by in the first lap, and had to wait
in 3nd place and settle for sticking close to the leaders. At the halfway
point it was Mike, Kevin and Tim Wooley in the top three spots. Kevin
and TJ Wilcheck were battling for 2nd place after Tim pitted, meanwhile
Mike took on some fuel with no loss of track position. His 15FE engine
was running great for the whole race! At the halfway point Mike had a
10-second lead over Kevin.
 By
this time TJ had dropped out with some mechanical trouble, so it was Tim
and Ricky Brian fighting for third place. Tim and Ricky exchanged places
during the last half of the race but Tim ended up edging out Ricky for
third spot after Ricky had to come in for a quick pit stop near the end
of the race. At the end, it was Mike with a 6-second lead over Kevin,
with Tim and Ricky in 3rd and 4th.

 We
expected the Nitro Open guys to be a lot faster than the Box Stock class,
and weren't disappointed - at least in the straightaway! Ben Puterbaugh
had the TQ and stayed out in front, avoiding the first turn pileup and
ran away with the lead throughout the whole race. Mel Donaldson and Mike
Cutwright were to battle for the entire 10-minute race, and eventually
finished behind Ben in 2nd and 3rd.

 Although
Randy Hight had dominated the first two rounds of qualifying, it was Kevin
Roberson who stole the TQ spot on Sunday. Kevin would start in the first
position for the main event, and would never look back. Although Randy
and TJ (qualified 2nd and 3rd, respectively) made valiant efforts to catch
Kevin, they were battling with each other too much to be able to catch
Kevin, who finished ten seconds ahead of them. Kevin was able to finish
a lap ahead of Randy and TJ, who were themselves two laps ahead of everyone
else.

 Although
it was Courtney Smith who held the pole position after qualifying, after
a few laps Billy DeBenedictus took over the lead. Courtney tried hard
to catch up, but came up with mechanical trouble a few minutes into the
15-minute main and had to watch from the stand as Billy ruled the track.
Billy ended up seven laps ahead of his dad, who grabbed second. Steve
Merken ended the race in third, narrowly edging out Matt Carone, who was
the youngest Proceed racer there.
