The judges for this HPI Challenge Concours were Bob Ciolino, a TSRCAR club member, Erik Shauver of HPI and Frank McKinney of HPI. They took a long time to look at the cars that were brought up and chose their top three picks, then spent a several more minutes to choose the winner.

Here are some of the standouts from the group of Concours challengers:

Finalists are chosen!

We chose several cars to be "finalists", that we would pick the top three cars from. Here are some pictures of the first group of finalists.

The Top Three Concours Challenge Finalists!

Tied for Second Place...
Hailing from Cincinnati, Ohio, Greg Stormer painted up this very nice Lotus Sport Elise. Greg says he took about 20 hours to paint the body, and he lost count of how many different colors it took to complete the paint job! Greg has been airbrushing for only about 2 years (he's sixteen years old), using a dual action Badger airbrush. Greg raced in Box Stock with a Nitro RS4 2 kit during the weekend.

Tied for Second Place...
Randy Rickard from Hamburg, Michigan, went home with an honorable mention for his perfectly painted Dodge Stratus body, painted with the Mopar paint scheme. Randy mounted the body on his RS4 Pro 2 chassis. In addition to the great job on the paint (no paint bleeding, fogging or missed masking on this body), Randy, who is a CNC machinist by trade, also had custom machined aluminum door handles and rotating disk brakes and calipers. The calipers attached to the front and rear uprights and were painted red, while each disk brake rotor was actually part of a hex hub. Each rotor was also drilled out for the cross drilled look. The "real metal" look really enhanced the car and looked great. Unfortunately Randy didn't have the calipers actually work to stop the car, that would have been great! Randy also had working front headlights that really enhanced the look of the body.

Originally from Dayton, Ohio, Tim Pennington walked home with the easy win in the Concours Challenge with a meticulously detailed Dodge Viper GTS-R body on his Super Nitro RS4! You can see from the pictures above that it took a lot of work to get the body in winning shape. One of the advantages of working with the Super Nitro bodies for a concours is that the scale of the body makes it easier to make custom accessories. Tim did some work on a computer to make custom decals as well as the engine and radiator details. Printed on clear sticker sheet (available at office supply stores) with a laser printer (you can use an inkjet printer), Tim was able to glue the interior details to the underside of the body to create a realistic three-dimensional look that really makes it stand out. Tim also used the same printer to make the rotating disk rotors and calipers behind the dyed Mesh Wheels. For extra 3D effects, Tim used plastic coat hangers that were painted and bent to make interior roll bars and side exhaust pipes. At the front, he used a set of RAM headlights for the center driving lights, and 6 volt lights from Radio Shack for the side driving lights and both sets of headlights. The overall effect and detail blew away all the other competition and made the car a worthy winner of our Concours Challenge!
